The Buoys “Unsolicited Advice….” out now
Sydney four-piece outfit The Buoys share their highly anticipated EP Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster; a collection of experiences, trial and error, and ultimately, a timeline of self-discovery.
Produced by Fletcher Matthews (Sweater Curse, CLEWS, Dear Seattle), Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster is a six-track journey packed to the brim with driving guitar riffs, emphatic percussion and cathartic lyricism. Zoe Catterall (singer) says “It starts with the admission of leaning into bad habits and fantasies, and moves on to big ouch heart break, and then onto questioning what is important to you or what you want, before finishing on the realisation that you are happy where you ended up. Top to bottom in a way it outlines the relationship you have with yourself when going through the motions of navigating life, and your connection with others but mostly yourself.”
EP Focus track Drive Me Home’ is a full circle moment that closes out the tumultuous journey the EP follows, wrapping up the emotional high and lows into a tale of reflection and resilience. “I was messing around with an acoustic in bed when I came up with the riff. It had a pretty different vibe and feel to what we‘d worked on together in the past, so I nearly didn’t send it to the girls because I wasn’t sure if they’d be into it. I remember trying to capture a sort of yearning that’s also wrapped up in a bit of joy. Something makes you feel warm and fuzzy amidst the melancholy”, explains lead guitarist Hilary Geddes
Taking 2021 by storm, The Buoys sold out headline tours across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney with their single ‘Bad Habit’ hailed as “the musical definition of a bullseye” by Richard Kingsmill. Solidifying their spot as front runners in the Australian music scene, the band sat in triple j’s Most Played for weeks on end (including cracking the top 5), as well as becoming cover girls for Spotify’s ‘Local Noise’ and ‘Rock Out’ playlists. The band swiftly followed this up with the release of cathartic banger ‘Lie To Me Again’, becoming the most playlisted Australian act across streaming platforms in release week, receiving a full rotation triple j add, cover placement on Spotify’s ‘Indie Arrivals’, as well as charting in Shazam’s Top 100, and Spotify AU Viral 50.
Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster is written on personal experience, while reflecting the bittersweet nature of relationships many have come to experience. To aid with the digestion of the EP the band have collaborated with local Sydney purveyor of fine goods, Condimental, to create their own ‘Sweet Relief’ Blood Orange and Thyme syrup. On the EP, Tess Wilkin (drummer) says: “We want to take our audience there with us in every way – make you want to let it all out with a big cry, or punch the air and thrash your head, and end with a feel good cathartic dance.”
With The Buoys in the driver’s seat, you’re going to want to put your seatbelt on pretty quick. Buckle in and enjoy the ride because you’re in for an unforgettable journey.
