Following the release of new single ‘Not a Fan‘, Way Dynamic’s debut album So Familiaris out today. To celebrate a new video for ‘Not a Fan’ has been released and an album launch has been announced.
Way Dynamic is Dylan Young, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Dylan is also a member of Snowy Band and Cool Sounds and plays the drums for Darren Hanlon and Emma Russack (amongst others).
The album So Familiar has been a few years in the making and follows the 2018 EP What’s It All For Now. The songs for the album were written during the pandemic. However, In the case of ‘Not A Fan’ and ‘Screw Off’, they were written on the day of recording. Dylan explains: “I feel writing some of the songs at the studio has lent some immediacy to the sound of the album, which I’m a big fan of”.  
When all the songs were ready to go Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons from Good Morning took over and not only recorded the tracks but backed up on some of the instruments. On working with the dynamic duo Dylan says: “They’re Melbourne’s Lennon and McCartney. Not only could they engineer and make records to tape amazingly, but their creative process is so free and uninhibited that it inspired some of the best, most unique moments on the record. We used that energy and finished each song the day they were started. And what a bonus that it was non-stop laughter and dancing around the studio”
While first single ‘So Familiar‘ is one of the album’s uptempo singalongs, the latest single ‘Not a Fan’ is it’s laid-back companion. Abby Butler from triple j unearthed in her 4-star review says: “[it’s] a charming and nostalgic treasure you’d stumble across while crate digging in your local record shop”.
In talking about the video Dylan says: “I think this clip is simply a beautiful thing to look at. Clouds, abstractly framed. I think that sort of exemplifies what Not A Fan is about. What beauty is and how it can relate to one’s confidence. Or in this case, it’s just something wonderful to look at.”
The album So Familiar is out now digitally and shortly on vinyl. Way Dynamic performs on Friday, November 11th at The Retreat in Melbourne.
