Sunscreen, debut EP “Just a Drop” available now on CD/digitally.
Frenetic yet agile, offbeat yet immediate – Spunk Records is pleased to introduce Sydney dream-rock band Sunscreen and their muscular new single ‘Tide‘. Premiered today via The Music, ‘Tide’ is the new track to be taken from Sunscreen’s anticipated debut EP ‘Just A Drop’ – a split from Spunk Records / Dinosaur City Records out now.
For ‘Tide’, a collaboration between lead singer / guitarist, Sarah Sykes, and lead guitarist, Alexander McDonald, the pair reflect on the all too familiar experience of waking up alone to the sobering light of day after an evening out, and the difficulty of finding meaning as a young person in a big city. McDonald came up with the guitar riff and chorus one Sunday morning (he’d been drinking too much coffee and listening to The Go-Betweens) and later brought the song to practice, where Sykes would layer lyrics and her captivating vocals over the top.
Sunscreen formed in the summer of 2016 when Sarah Sykes invited Alexander McDonald and drummer Hugo Levingston over for a jam. Six months later, the trio played their first show following the release of single ‘Now I’ve got your Heart’, and six months ago, following the release of second single ‘Voices’, bassist Jett Amity joined the group. Spearheaded by Alex’s instantly catchy guitar riffs, the band’s guitar-pop places dreamy Cocteau Twins-esque vocal melodies over driving post-punk-inspired beats.
In 2017 alone, the band has supported promising acts including The Ocean Party, Rolling Blackouts C.F, Totally Mild, Shining Bird, The Orwells and Jade Imagine. This November, the band are to support RVG for their A Quality of Mercy tour at Oxford Art Factory and DMA’s for their Dawning single launch at Paddington Town Hall ahead of headline shows accompanying the launch of their debut EP, Just a Drop, a split between Dinosaur City Records and Spunk.
