Babitha “Through the Light” out now

Folk songwriter Babitha today shares her debut EP, Through The Light, via Spunk Records. Experience Babitha live at Mary’s Underground on Friday March 12 where she will be launching her debut EP. Tickets available HERE + listen to Through The Light HERE.
Through The Light is a journey through heartbreak, retreat, and finding yourself along the way; accepting your flaws and building the strength to move on. The musical endeavour of Gadigal/Sydney creative Imogen GristBabitha‘s debut includes previous releases ‘The Clown‘, a prompt to not get caught up in what isn’t important, and ‘Get Away‘s ode to running away from inner city living, both of which received playlist rotation on ABC CountryDouble Jtriple j Unearthed and community radios, FBi Radio and 2SER. Completing the circle includes companion tracks ‘Carry On‘ and ‘Be Alright‘, that serve as reminders to push through tough times and that disarray is only momentary. “I can’t do nothing right, but I’m walking through the light to you,” sings Babitha on the title track, an assessment of putting others on a pedestal as a result of your own feelings of inadequacy, while ‘Golden Hour‘ is a sassy reprieve, boasting one’s self worth and letting go.
In her own words, Grist shares: “This EP encompasses a bittersweet moment in my life. At the time we started recording, I was living by the beach, making music in the garage with friends, tending to my veggies and enjoying the slower pace of a small community – it really felt like I was in the right place at the right time. The dream couldn’t last forever though, and by the time the EP was getting mastered, I found myself single, back in Sydney in a 5 person sharehouse, and lacking any sense of direction. The songs felt tarnished and I lost the enthusiasm I initially had for releasing my music. In hindsight, I think I was just super depressed, plus Covid didn’t help by quashing a lot of opportunities for an emerging artist, so I decided to tap out for a bit and went home to Orange to stay with my mum.”
She continues, “I avoided listening to music or writing any new songs as I just needed time and space by myself until I felt ready to face the world again. I was eventually ready to crawl out of my hole and there was enough emotional distance from the songs that I was able put the wheels in motion to release my first single ‘Get Away’. It was ironic that this song about ‘getting away’ and ‘moving out of the city’, something which my ex and I had attempted to do but failed, was the first track people would hear from Babitha. Regardless, it struck a chord (pun definitely intended) with audiences and I began to feel more confident as an artist. These songs serve as a useful reminder that not everything goes according to plan, but that’s ok!”
What happens when one of your biggest pieces of consistency in life and everything surrounding it, crumbles? Babitha explores that universal story of metamorphosis through relationship breakdown, it’s mourning process and the pieces that only you can put back together again, without the help of all the king’s horses and all the king’s men., across her debut EP. She traipses through the darkest corners of this voyage with a grit inspired by the mythology of the ‘other woman’, reshaped into an empowering fragility that could only be penned retrospectively. Now emotionally and physically recharged and ready to take on the world again, Babitha arrives on Through The Light, leaving us to wonder where she’s been hiding all along.
